The 6 Most Important Vitamins Every Man Needs

In honor of Men’s Health Week and Father’s Day, this post is all about men.

Let’s just be real, men are less likely to keep up with their own health than women. So to help them out, here are some helpful supplements every man should add to their daily intake.

Potassium

Low potassium raises the risk for cardiovascular problems, like high blood pressure, which affects about one in every three adult men. You can find the potassium you need in foods like sweet potato,  salmon, bananas, beans, avocado and grass-fed beef.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is important for building and maintaining strong bones, blood clotting, and preventing heart disease. Vitamin K1 is found in green leafy vegetables, broccoli, collards and cabbage, wild-caught fish and cage-free eggs, vitamin K2 is found in dairy products.

Omega-3 Fish Oils

Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and are found in salmon, sardines, tuna, halibut, eggs, nuts, and seeds.

Vitamin D

Men need vitamin D to produce enough testosterone, maintain strong bones, protect brain health, prevent mood disorders like depression, and help control cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Vitamin D can be consumed by eating eggs, some dairy products, and some mushrooms, but we get the majority of our vitamin D from direct sun exposure.

Vitamins A, C, and E

Eating dark leafy greens like spinach, kale or collard greens, is the best way to get protective antioxidants like vitamin C and A. For vitamin E, eat nuts and seeds like almonds and sunflower seeds. Eating these foods can lower your risk for conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, strokes, skin damage and diabetes.

Magnesium

Magnesium helps with regulating calcium, potassium and sodium levels, helping prevent conditions like high blood pressure, muscle spasms, headaches and heart disease. Magnesium rich foods include spinach, dark chocolate, black beans, almonds, avocado, dried figs, banana, dried pumpkin seeds, Swiss chard, and yogurt.
