How To Peacefully Respond To Conflict

As we strive to reach our goals and live our best lives, we will be hit with setbacks, roadblocks, negativity, obstacles, a lack of faith, and so on and so on. No matter what we want to call it, all of these challenges are conflicts that we face every day in our lives.

As with everything in life, the Bible is God’s way of giving us the guidance we need to live according to His will. So, what does the Bible say about how we should respond to conflict in a peaceful matter.

 

Conflict With Others

If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Matthew 18:15-17

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1

But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you. Luke 6:27

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. James 5:16

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful. 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Matthew 5:25

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32

Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Colossians 3:13

to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. Ephesians 4:22-27

Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.  Hebrews 12:14

To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head. Romans 12:20

Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses. Proverbs 10:12

 

Life Challenges

The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so quit before the quarrel breaks out. Proverbs 17:14

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Matthew 5:9

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. James 1:19-21

Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.  Proverbs 21:23

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. Matthew 19:26

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4

Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools.  Ecclesiastes 7:9

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29
