A Girl’s Guide to Planning a Fun & Frugal Spring Break

It’s almost Spring and Spring Break vacations have already begun.  I don’t know about you, but I am always looking for a great deal on any trip I plan to take, and Spring Break vacation is one I want to spend as little as possible on.

So for today, I am sharing 5 tips to plan a fun and frugal Spring Break vacation.

  1.   Look Up Free Things to Do at Your Destination

There is always something fun and free to do no matter where you are. Before you leave for your trip, look up fee events that are local to your destination. Some great sites to use are Facebook, Yelp, and Trip Advisor.

  1.  Have a Budget in Mind

Before any major trip, always start out with a budget. This will keep you on track and help with your planning. The key is sticking to that budget. Your vacation budget should include ALL of your expenses; luggage, new clothing, new travel sized cosmetics and body goods, travel essentials, food, lodging, transportation (to, during, from), souvenirs, entertainment, etc. Check out sites like Skyscanner and Google Flights to find the cheapest days and location you can fly to from your home airport if flying.

  1.  Take Into Account the Weather Conditions

Every time I visit Florida (except for the one time I went for a conference and had no time for fun) it rains almost every day.  Bad weather can put a damper on your plans and your budget. Check the weather before you leave and plan some fun things to do on those rainy days.  Since it’s Spring, you shouldn’t have to worry about blizzards (depending on your destination), but rain can cause events to close or that outside restaurant to become not so appetizing. Having rainy day plans will keep your vacay fun and exciting. And remember to pack for the weather!

  1.  Call the Hotel Yourself

Now I am one to use a booking site when I go on vacation. I have heard that it’s better to check prices with the hotel before booking. Hotels may run specials that even the booking site will not offer. You may even be able to negotiate with the hotel itself, which you definitely can’t do on a booking site.

  1. Have Fun!

Of course, a vacation is supposed to be a time to take a break from the real world. However, there are a few of us who are so focused on our vacation, destination, and plans, that we forget to actually stop and enjoy ourselves. Plan out times to just sit back and observe the environment. Plan naps if needed.  Too often we come home from a vacation and need another vacation to recuperate from the vacation itself. That’s only a good thing if you’re exhausted from having too much fun.  Your plans should be flexible because just like in life, stuff happens on a vacation too. If you don’t get to see or do everything you planned, plan to go back and visit that place once again. No biggie! If this is a group or family trip, take time to really enjoy your company. You learn a lot about someone while on a vacation.

Bonus – Make Your Own Food

If you are staying at a hotel where there is a fridge, microwave, or an actual kitchen in your room, make your own food. Budget what you want to spend on restaurant food to get that experience, but plan to make most of your own meals.  Many hotels provide complimentary breakfast, so plan to stay at one if it’s at your destination. However, some only offer the coffee they leave in your rooms. Making your own breakfast and lunch can save you hundreds of dollars during a vacation.
