Girls Guide To Finding the Right Swimwear for Your Body Type

Shopping for bathing suits is not as fun for some of us as it is for others.  But when you know what looks good on your body, shopping for anything, including a bathing suit becomes so much easier.

Today’s society will have you thinking you can wear whatever you want. Well, ladies, that’s just not true. It’s all about wearing what works for you. Not everything looks good on everyone. And when it comes to swimwear, knowing what works for your body type is even more important since our bodies are exposed the most in bathing suits.

Please do not get dressing for your body type confused with body shaming. It also is not specifically about size, it’s more about body shapes. Even Victoria’s Secret angels can’t wear any and every bathing suit. Dressing for your body type simply means, wearing clothing, in this case, swimsuits, that are the most flattering for your body. In other words, wearing clothes that make you look the best so that you are wearing your clothes and your clothes are not wearing you.

Let’s start off by identifying your body type first.

The Inverted Triangle – broad shoulders and narrow hips.

Women with this body type look fabulous in a two-piece. Halter tops are great for flattering broad shoulders. A deep V with straps that sit at the edge of the shoulders work great too. A full brief is more flattering for this body type than a string bikini, it helps to balance out the larger shoulders.

The Lean Column – slim with minimal curves, and small breast.

For the lean column woman like myself, two pieces work best. A one-piece will show off the lack of curves more.  Triangle bra halter tops work great at helping to create the illusion of bigger boobs. But mostly any bra shaped bikini top will do.  Closed front tops are not the best as they make the bust look even smaller. The bottoms will depend on your leg length, but most low rise bottoms will be most flattering as they create the illusion of actual hips.

The Rectangle – same width from chest to hips with minimal curves.

Cut out swimwear is best for the rectangular shaped body. With the right cutouts, the illusion of curves is created that flatters this body type amazingly.

The Apple – narrow shoulders with stomach bigger than the breast.

Thin straps and tummy support is ideal for this body size. High waisted two pieces or a super cute one piece will flatter the apple shaped lady.

The Pear – narrow shoulders, small breast, long waist, flat stomach, bigger bottom.

With the pear-shaped lady, its all about balance. You want to draw attention to the upper body with lighter colors, lower necklines, and broader prints. One-pieces will be harder to find as your hips are bigger than your breast, so two-pieces are your best friends.  With the flatter stomach, a mid to low rise is perfect, but high waisted works too.

The Hour Glass – breast and hips are the same sizes, with a long waist and flat stomach.

This body shape looks good in both one-piece and two-pieces but will have to be careful with finding the proper support.

Don’t forget your leg length. Short waisted women look most flattering in a two piece with the bottoms sitting lower on the waistline or on the hips. Women will longer legs also look more flattering in boyshorts than women with shorter legs. Women with short legs look more flattering in bottoms with a higher leg cut. Your body shape will determine what type of top would work best for you. See below.
