Top 5 Most Influential Women of the Bible

Happy National Women’s Day and National Women’s Month!. In honor of both Women’s Day and Women’s Month, I am sharing my top 5 most influential women from the Bible.

  1.  Eve

Minus the whole forbidden tree mishap, let’s look at how influential Eve really is. Think about it, she was the first, one and only woman to grace this planet. She did not have anyone to teach her how to be a woman, a wife, a mother, how to cook, how to clean, etc. She had to figure it all out on her own. All of what we know, we know because of her.

Here’s another take on how influential she is. God created all animals and Adam from dust. But God created Eve from Adam’s rib. Even from her creation, she was made like no other. She was uniquely created. She is literally the mother of all the world. There is not one of us who have been born, who is not a descendant of Eve.

  1. Proverbs 31 Woman

Now, I read this chapter on each of the 31st day of the month. Each time I read it, I see something different. In preparing for today’s post, I wasn’t sure if I liked what I read. This time, I saw a woman being stripped of her power. However, doing further study, I was able to see just how influential and strong the Proverbs 31 woman is and why we should all strive to be like her.

Proverbs 31: 10 says “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.”  Strong’s defines virtuous as “probably a force, whether of men, means or other resources”. King Lemuel’s mother is telling him to seek a strong woman who is committed to the battle of caring for her home and her people; a warrior! She is God fearing (v30), a hard worker (v.13-19, 21, 24, 27, 31), considerate (v. 20, 24, 27), and appreciates her value to the Lord (v. 17, 18, 22, 25-26).

  1.  The Woman Who Touched The Hem Of Jesus’ Garment

“And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind Him, and touched the hem of His garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch His garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned Him about, and when He saw her, He said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour”. Matthew 9:20 – 22)

This woman is so influential for her faith in the Lord. Oh, how I wish I had the opportunity to just touch His garment and know that I would be healed. I am blessed to know I can call on Him at any time and ask for healing. But to be able to see Jesus in the flesh, how amazing! Oh to live in the times of Jesus. The amount of faith it took to believe in him during His time on Earth alone is huge. But she not only believed in Him as the son of God, she believed in His power and that He would save her. Save someone who’s name we don’t even know.

Secondly, she is influential because she had the nerve enough to touch Jesus knowing she was not “clean.” Even with her disease and being ostracized for it, she still was brave enough to reach out and touch Him to be made whole. How awesome is that courage?

  1.  Mary, Mother of Jesus

Mary is influential not only because she is the chosen one. She is influential because even before she became Jesus’ mother, she served God. She had a proper respect for God and His authority.  When Mary was presented by Gabriel with a task that could have gotten her killed, she responded, “may it be done to me according to your word.” God’s taking notice of her and choosing her is remarkable. Her strength to stand nearby asher Son hung on the cross is remarkable. She really causes you to think about how do you approach the things you are chosen to do? Are you able to willing accept something that does not make sense with faith and trust in God?

  1.  The Daughters of Zelophehad

I’m kind of cheating here as there are 5 daughters alone. But I think I’ll be ok as they all worked together.

These five women, Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah, are so influential for standing up to claim their inheritance during a time when women had no rights and to stand up and demand what they wanted in a place where women did not have authority is monumental.  They are influential because they had faith as they trusted in God’s provision for them, faith in God’s promises of the future (a land to come), and faith that they could be used by God to bring about change.
